To participate in intercollegiate athletics, a student must:
-
be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours at Lyon College,
-
have a cumulative Lyon College GPA of at least 2.000,
-
have passed at least two-thirds of credit hours attempted at Lyon College during the previous academic year (note that grades of F, W, AW, I, FL, WP, and WF do not count as passing, and see Academic Terms on page 13 for the definition of an academic year that includes fall, spring, and summer terms).
Criterion 2 and 3 do not apply to first-time students. Transfer students and students readmitted to the College are immediately eligible for athletics if official transcripts demonstrate that they have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.000 in all previously attempted college work. See Categories of Entrance to Lyon College on page 302 for definitions of student types.
A student may compete while enrolled less than full-time provided the student is enrolled in the final semester of the baccalaureate program and the College certifies that the student is carrying (for credit) the courses necessary to complete degree requirements.
The GPA used in eligibility determination for the next academic term will be calculated at the end of the spring term for first-time students and at the end of each academic term for others, including transfer students. Any summer term during which a student takes any Lyon College courses will be factored into criteria 2 and 3 above when determining eligibility for the subsequent fall term.
Once the certification of eligibility decision has been made, a student must be eligible or cease all participation in intercollegiate athletics until the next subsequent certification period. A student becomes immediately ineligible during a semester if he or she drops below 12 enrolled credit hours.
Student-athletes deemed ineligible may continue to practice (not compete) only during the “non-traditional” season (during the spring or fall semester) to prepare for the upcoming traditional season and earn certification for athletic eligibility. Practice during the non-traditional season consists of no more than 20 hours of contact with coaches over a 4-week consecutive period.
